Australia bans social media, for kids under age 16
This is actually a power-grab to try to force KYC checks for all ages, as a form of crushing criticism of the government. They are threatening to fine Meta, Snapchat, Google, and others, 30 million if they don’t comply. Although exactly what steps are required still is unclear. It appears that just surveillance of the user’s history may be enough, while in other cases forced ID.
The ban comes into effect Dec 10th. Google already announced they are signing out teen accounts for Youtube, even if they were earning money and had millions of followers. But it would be available again once they turn 16. [2]
Quote PBS,
Google said Wednesday that anyone in Australia under 16 would be signed out of its platform YouTube from Dec. 10 and lose features accessible only to account holders such as playlists.
Once again, I urge people to check out Nostr & Arweave. As decentralized social media may one day become the only place for real freedom.
