Free is a Cancer
Most FOSS advocates are wrong

Free as in Beer
I have the exact opposite view of most “FOSS” Linux advocates. They view the world through a lens where the government and non-profits fund services, and then everything is free.
This is ridiculous as the government is the one you are hiding from. It’s not logical to have that same government then fund the resistance tools and servers.
Micropayments
My worldview is that everyone should have a cryptocurrency wallet, and there should be micropayments to do anything.
Pay to post on social media
Pay to send messages
Pay to host a website
Pay as a Captcha to view stuff
When something is free, it forces restrictions and surveillance to stop abuse. Someone has to decide when you can stop getting it for free.
Cloudflare doing everyone’s DDoS is the result of free captchas.
SimpleX having client-side flags to delete illegal content on his servers, is a result of free servers for messages.
Nostr having gay porn spam is a result of free relays.
Tor exit IPs being blocked, and having the government host nodes is the result of free service.
Cock-li emails were hacked, which is the result of lack of self-hosting and centralization from a free service.
Google gives free emails, free video hosting, free search engine, free free free, and practically free is your data.
If it’s free, then you’re the product. Or there is no product and it will die. So when people complain about not wanting to spend $1 on our VPN, or not wanting to pay to host a site on Arweave, then my response is to get on your knees and obey authority’s terms of service.
Ultimately, free is a cancer that plagues humanity, because it forces an authority’s surveillance to decide appropriate use. And usually a single participant can scale through harsher enforcement to control the service more efficiently. And then it turns Mastodon, chat, email, and website servers into Dr. Seuss’ Thidwick the moose, where the leeches weigh him down. Even if he had good intentions when he started, it’s unsustainable to have the dependents free-load.
Instead, I view the world through the lens of Crypto-Anarchy, where I reject the right to rule, by those who currently claim the throne. And if you truly want freedom in this world, then you have to learn how to use the tools, and actually apply that knowledge. I can “hodl” hold your hand with my content, but action has to come from you.
And getting cryptocurrency is not as hard as you think.
