andOTP: 2FA on Android

If you absolutely must do 2FA on your android device (because you prefer to scan QR code pictures over effortlessly copying and pasting the backup phrase), then we recommend andOTP. AndOTP is a free and open source TOTP 2FA app which is available from the F-Droid store. We highly recommend using a degoogled device, but it will work on a regular tyranny android. And if you really want to learn how to become a ghost, subscribe for free to our new content by email, by Session messenger, RSS feed, or Nostr.

Always try F-Droid first

A major benefit of andOTP is that it allows you to password protect your TOTP authentication database. So someone who just opens your phone can’t just open the app and get into your accounts.

Also unlike Google Authenticator, andOTP will let you access the backup phrase, so you can transfer it to a desktop client at a later point. In fact, if you ONLY have the QR code and are NOT given access to the backup phrase, then andOTP can be used to scan the QR code to get the phrase.
